During a fun two year birthday photo shoot several months ago, one of my very favorite families shared with me they were expecting their 2nd baby.  I was so thrilled to hear their family was growing.  So excited to see this sweet girl become a big sister and elated to know this baby will so surrounded by love in this family.

I first met this family a few years ago at their 1st daughter’s newborn portrait session.  They were beaming with love for their new baby girl and I knew they would be amazing parents.  I have had the honor of photographing them for several years now and am grateful to continue to share in their journey.  This sweet girl is going to be an amazing BIG SISTER!  🙂

We met at sunset in a pastel light filled of willow trees … nature was at it’s prime and we couldn’t have asked for a more amazing location to capture their journey into becoming a family of four.  This sweet little girl always greets me with a big hug and smiles!  I am so excited to meet this new baby girl very soon and continue to watch this beautiful family grow.

Motherhood…it’s been on my mind all week with Mother’s Day approaching.  Most of my business is focused on motherhood, each and every season of it.  From entering into motherhood (maternity portrait sessions) to becoming a mommy (newborn photo shoots) to mommy life (milestone baby portrait sessions) to mastering motherhood (high school senior portraits) and beyond, it all revolves around motherhood.

I have had a soul-searching week this week…now that my youngest is driving, I have had more time to think and over-think everything.  I have been asking myself “why” I do what I do several times….why am I a portrait photographer….why is my focus motherhood?  I took a photography workshop several years ago and this was one of the first things the host spoke about … finding your “why” in business.  We are approaching BIG decisions with this business and it takes a lot of soul-searching prior to taking the next step.

My “why” for this business… I determined a long time ago that I wanted to celebrate motherhood, every season of it.

I have worked hard my entire life…my Dad always told me “nothing good was ever easy, and nothing easy was ever good”…you had to work hard.

In school,  I worked hard, studied like crazy and mastered success, climbed to the top of my class, won academic awards, memberships to honor societies, scored high on the ACT & SAT, graduated with honors, and much more, but there was more in life than just that…I knew that wasn’t my only purpose.

I have worked hard at many jobs, entering the workforce at 15 years of age, while in school…I never went through a lazy season…I was a hard worker, eager to please, results -oriented, self-disciplined and always willing to go above and beyond.  I climbed my way up the corporate ladder, achieved titles and success at a young age, but there was more than just that in life … I knew that wasn’t my only purpose.

After school and in the midst of a successful corporate career, I married my best friend. We had discussions as to when to start a family and had decided after 5 years of marriage we would try … but God had different plans.  After a few years of marriage, in the prime of my career…we found out we were expecting.

At that moment, everything changed.  I found my purpose…it was to be a good mom … the very best mommy I could be.  My priorities changed but my work ethic did not.  Like Daddy said, “nothing good was ever easy, and nothing easy was ever good” … so I worked hard, incredibly hard, harder than ever before.

Except this time, I didn’t win awards, receive high scores, earn merits, climb any ladders, or shatter any glass ceilings, but I tried with everything in me to be the best mommy I could be.  In fact, many times I fell short, and still do, but I can honestly say I have poured my whole heart into my babies and motherhood is everything to me.

So this is my “why” … I want to capture motherhood, in every stage…I believe motherhood is both beautiful and treasured…I want to create memories for mommies because while they may hold their babies in the arms now, soon they will grow, but they can hold the memories we create in their hearts forever.

I walk down the halls of my home and pause at every portrait ever taken of my children.  I remember each moment so well and am thankful to have documented their journey in this life.  My portraits of my children are one of my most prized possessions.  There is no greater gift than the gift of memories and I would be so honored to provide these sweet memories for you and your family.

Here are just a few moments of motherhood I have been honored to capture …

Mother’s Day is on my mind this morning … I have had the honor of capturing so many moms in so many different seasons of motherhood over the years.  All have one thing in common … love.  There is an overwhelming love that moms have for their babies and it radiates in every photo shoot.  And there is a peace and a calm that comes when mom is near … babies, children and even teens and adults seem to melt into their momma’s arms in front of the camera.

Momma…I implore you to consider portraits with your children.  I understand some of us (me included) are not extremely comfortable in front of the camera, but I promise you will regret not being in your family portraits with your babies.  Your babies will soon grow up an want to see you in their portraits and you will want to remember those moments and every moment of the journey to the fullest.

Did you know there was a recent study that suggested children who see themselves in family portraits have a high sense of value within their family unit?  When I read this, I completely and instantly understood the findings of this study, as I see this first-hand.  One of my clients actually sent me the link to this article and commented that her daughter’s confidence soared in recent years since I have been photographing her family.  It’s true… when I began photographing this sweet little two year old, she was so incredibly adorable, but so shy.  Today, she is confident and beaming every time I see her!  There are many stories like this, as I have the honor of watching families grow as they return year after year for portraits.  I am ever so grateful for my loyal client base and count it a privilege to document their memories over the years.

Make the memories all along the journey of motherhood.  And mom, trust us…we have years of experience photographing moms and know how to achieve those dreamy portraits you so desire.  We take time with our clients so they have an incredible experience and quality results.  We will work through a variety angles and poses to achieve the best look.  Also, we have a hair and makeup stylist available if you wish to be pampered prior to your photo shoot, and every mom deserves a little pampering at times.
